Silk is a protein fibre produced from the slime of an insect, the Bombyx Mori, and is used to make fine fabrics.

It was during the 18th century that silk production in Como became industrial; in 1840, mulberry trees, the plants that silkworms feed on, covered 93% of the cultivated surface in the Como area. In the past, it was peasant families who took care of silkworm breeding and spinning mills and weaving mills arose everywhere.
